NoSQL databases: A survey

NoSQL data stores have introduced a new way of designing database systems to meet the recent needs of applications and services operating in areas such as the World Wide Web, Big Data, and Data Analytics. They offer a means to store and access high volumes of partially structured data by enhancing the flexibility of the data model and integrating distributed architecture at their core, thus providing better properties of high data availability and low data latency.This paper reviews the various design approaches of NoSQL data stores, providing up-to-date information on their data models, request processing, scalability, storage management, data dis- tribution modes, and use cases. Multi-target synthesis of logic controllers using a MDE approach

GRAFCET is a powerful graphical modeling language for the specification of controllers in discrete event systems. It considers hierarchical structures as well as structural and semantic constraints. In this paper, we propose to use a GRAFCET specification model in a Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach for multi-target synthesis of embedded logic control systems based on microcontrollers. In this approach, a GRAFCET metamodel is associated with a microcontroller metamodel which characterizes the microcontroller platform features to be considered when generating code. The GRAFCET metamodel includes the modeling of expressions to facilitate model verification and an easy interpretation of Grafcet events and time constraints. Transformation rules for generation of C-programmable microcontroller code are then presented. As application, we present a platform based on Eclipse EMF, Object Constraint Language (OCL) and Acceleo code generation engine.

Le quartier de l’Herberie à Lyon depuis la construction du pont de Saône jusqu’à sa démolition (Xe – XIXe siècles): Les résultats des fouilles du parking Saint-Antoine (Lyon 2e)

Les fouilles préventives menées dans le cadre de la construction du parking Saint-Antoine à Lyon, en rive gauche de la Saône, ont permis de mettre en lumière l’occupation de ce quartier fluvial au cours des deux derniers millénaires. Ce lieu, déjà tourné vers le commerce et l’artisanat durant l’Antiquité, deviendra un des hauts lieux marchands de la ville médiévale puis moderne. Situé au débouché du seul pont enjambant la rivière entre le XIe et le milieu du XVIIe siècle, ce quartier, qui s’organise autour de la place de l’Herberie, connaîtra, une fois le pont de pierre achevé, un nouvel essor marqué par de profonds changements urbanistiques. Il se développera également sur la berge, en aval du pont, où, à partir de la fin du XVe siècle, se succèderont des aménagements portuaires en réponse au développement du commerce et pour désengorger les rues étroites de la Presqu’île.

Une riche fenêtre temporelle dans la plaine de l’Ain : la fouille de Saint-Vulbas (01) – « PIPA Lot 9 secteur sud-ouest »

Le site évoqué ici est situé dans la plaine de l’Ain (01), sur la commune de Saint-Vulbas. Il s’agit de l’un des nombreux locus fouillés dans le cadre de l’extension du Parc industriel de la Plaine de l’Ain (PIPA), dont le travail d’étude est encore en cours. L’emprise concernée par l’opération de fouille correspond à un linéaire qui suit une voie antique, objectif principal de la prescription. Cette opération a permis la découverte de nombreux vestiges de différentes périodes. Les plus anciens correspondent à un complexe funéraire qui se poursuit sur un temps long : monument et sépultures néolithiques, enclos circulaires ou carrés protohistoriques, auxquels sont associées des sépultures (inhumation et dépôts de crémation). Par la suite s’implante une voie antique qui connaît plusieurs aménagements, associés à l’implantation de nombreuses sépultures en bord de voie (inhumations, dépôts de crémation et bûchers). L’ensemble livre le portrait d’un territoire parcouru et utilisé de longue date.

It is proved that there exists a positive integer $n_0$, which depends only on $p$, such that $q^(ν_q(n!)) < p^(ν_p(n!))$ for all $n \ge n_0$ and all primes $q > p$. For twin primes $p$ and $q = p + 2$ it is proved that the minimal $n_0$ satisfying $q^(ν_q(n!)) < p^(ν_p(n!))$ for all $n \ge n_0$ is given by $n_0 = (p^2+p)/2$.

Rank-based linkage I: triplet comparisons and oriented simplicial complexes

Rank-based linkage is a new tool for summarizing a collection $S$ of objects according to their relationships. These objects are not mapped to vectors, and ``similarity'' between objects need be neither numerical nor symmetrical. All an object needs to do is rank nearby objects by similarity to itself, using a Comparator which is transitive, but need not be consistent with any metric on the whole set. Call this a ranking system on $S$. Rank-based linkage is applied to the $K$-nearest neighbor digraph derived from a ranking system. Computations occur on a 2-dimensional abstract oriented simplicial complex whose faces are among the points, edges, and triangles of the line graph of the undirected $K$-nearest neighbor graph on $S$. In $|S| K^2$ steps it builds an edge-weighted linkage graph $(S, \mathcal{L}, σ)$ where $σ(\{x, y\})$ is called the in-sway between objects $x$ and $y$. Take $\mathcal{L}_t$ to be the links whose in-sway is at least $t$, and partition $S$ into components of the graph $(S, \mathcal{L}_t)$, for varying $t$. Rank-based linkage is a functor from a category of ``out-ordered'' digraphs to a category of partitioned sets, with the practical consequence that augmenting the set of objects in a rank-respectful way gives a fresh clustering which does not ``rip apart'' the previous one. The same holds for single linkage clustering in the metric space context, but not for typical optimization-based methods. Orientation sheaves play in a fundamental role and ensure that partially overlapping data sets can be ``glued'' together. Open combinatorial problems are presented in the last section.

Safety of food delivery platform riders

This article deals with the safety of bicycle food delivery platform riders working in city centers. Few academic studies have addressed this issue. The article presents three main studies. The results show a high risk of accident, but not significantly higher than that observed for cyclists in general. Concerning accidents characteristics and processes, there are certain specific features, such as the under-representation of accidents occurring on cycle facilities. Observations of driving behavior show that delivery riding is a work with significant road safety risks. They corroborate some of the differences observed in accidents. For example, they effectively do use less bicycle infrastructures. All the results are discussed with reference to previous works. Some perspectives for prevention are discussed.

What future for electric scooters?

The electric scooter, known for its fun, compact, design and affordability, seemed set for significant growth. However, its sales in France have sharply declined over the past two years (-25%). This raises the question: is this decline due to temporary circumstances or more fundamental issues? While factors such as a post-pandemic fad and decreasing purchasing power may contribute, they appear insufficient to explain the trend. This article investigates the deeper structural issues using two analytical tools: 1/ The concept of modal system, which allows for the analysis of the evolutionary dynamics of a given mode of transport; 2/ A comparison between e-scooters and competing modes of transport, particularly bicycles. Our analysis reveals that structuring a robust "e-scooter system" is quite challenging. E-scooter users often demand unrealistic freedom of use despite their vulnerability to accidents. The technical attributes of e-scooters render them inherently unsafe, and the available infrastructure for their use is limited. Moreover, regulations are becoming increasingly stringent, even though France remains one of the more lenient countries in Europe. Safety concerns continue to emerge as a key issue. The article delves into this aspect, highlighting the alarming frequency of e-scooter accidents, including numerous solo falls and faceplants. While it remains challenging to quantify precisely, the risk associated with e-scooter use appears to be three times higher than that of bicycles. Additionally, due to their largely passive usage, e-scooters present a negative public health impact. Nevertheless, they are likely to sustain and even grow in specific niches when alternatives like cars, public transport, or walk-ing are less appealing, or when securely parking or transporting a bicycle becomes problematic.

D'ESLO à ESLO-FLEU : enjeux méthodologiques de la structuration de données pour la linguistique et la didactique du FLE

The ESLO-FLEU corpus is a subset of the Enquêtes Sociolinguistiques à Orléans (ESLO), a corpus of spoken French collected in two stages (ESLO1 1968-1970 and ESLO2 2008-), according to a similar methodology. Developed by sociolinguists and designed as an audio portrait of Orléans by its inhabitants, ESLO contains 422 hours of transcribed audio recordings collected in various communication situations and from a socially diverse panel of speakers. These data, which document French as it is spoken and its evolution over a period of 40 years, are of particular interest not only in linguistics, but also in the teaching of French as a foreign language. The dataset presented here, ESLO-FLEU (ESLO – Fle et Linguistique pour l'Enseignement Universitaire), is a selection of 150 excerpts lasting 2 to 4 minutes, chosen to highlight the heritage dimension of the corpus and to shed light on topics of conversation that are relevant to oral comprehension activities in French classes (everyday conversation, daily activities, social issues, testimonials about neighborhoods, leisure activities, professions, etc.). Indexed by theme and enriched with linguistic annotations, these excerpts are grouped into themes, sub-themes, and modules for an introduction to linguistics, and can be consulted online or downloaded from Ortolang in various formats depending on the needs of users, whether they are teachers or researchers in linguistics and didactics.

Well quasi-order and atomicity for combinatorial structures under consecutive orders

We consider partially ordered sets of combinatorial structures under consecutive orders, meaning that two structures are related when one embeds in the other such that `consecutive' elements remain consecutive in the image. Given such a partially ordered set, we may ask decidability questions about its avoidance sets: subsets defined by a finite number of forbidden substructures. Two such questions ask, given a finite set of structures, whether its avoidance set is well quasi-ordered (i.e. contains no infinite antichains) or atomic (i.e. cannot be expressed as the union of two proper subsets). Extending some recent new approaches, we will establish a general framework, which enables us to answer these problems for a wide class of combinatorial structures, including graphs, digraphs and collections of relations.

Penney's game for permutations

We consider the permutation analogue of Penney's game for words. Two players, in order, each choose a permutation of length $k\ge3$; then a sequence of independent random values from a continuous distribution is generated, until the relative order of the last $k$ numbers coincides with one of the chosen permutations, making that player the winner. We compute the winning probabilities for all pairs of permutations of length 3 and some pairs of length 4, showing that, as in the original version for words, the game is non-transitive. Our proofs introduce new bijections for consecutive patterns in permutations. We also give some formulas to compute the winning probabilities more generally, and conjecture a winning strategy for the second player when $k$ is arbitrary.

Potential of biochars from agricultural residues in domestic wastewater treatment using vertical flow filters vegetated with Echinochloa pyramidalis.

The treatment of domestic wastewater by vegetated filters is proposed as an alternative better suited to the socio-economic conditions of developing countries. The use of biochar in these filters in partial or total substitution of conventional filter substrate was the main aim of the present study. The effectiveness of three biochars produced from three crop wastes (Corn cobs, coconut shells and palm nut shells) in improving the purification performance of vertical flow filters vegetated with antelope grass was studied. The experimental set-up consisted of three biochar filters plus a control replicated thrice. The filters were supplied at a hydraulic loading rate of 142 l/m2/jr. The physi-co-chemical characteristics of the water were measured 30 and then 60 days from the beginning of the test; the physical growth parameters of randomly selected plants were measured weekly between the 30th and the 60th day, i.e. 4 times. The results reveal an increase in pH, an improvement in the reduction of nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, and microbes content effluents from biochar filters compared to those from conventional sand filters. Overall, the corn cob biochar filter showed better results after two months. It remains important for future studies to monitor the parameters over a longer period and to test the effect of the combination of the three biochars in one filter.

Method for quantifying urban mine flows: the case of clay bricks in Ile-de-France

The building sector is a large consumer of resources and a major producer of waste. In a context of resource depletion, the building sector will have to implement strategies to become more circular. One possible solution is to resort to urban mining, i.e., to see existing buildings as a resource pool available for future construction or renovation of the building stock during their deconstruction or renovation. This article proposes a method to compare the quantities generated by deconstruction and renovation to the needs of new construction or renovation projects. After deconstruction, building components may be suitable for various secondary uses from reuse to recycling. The uses issued from reuse and recycling are identified and the quantities of materials corresponding to each of them are determined with adequate units (m2, kg...) to be compared with the new buildings’ project’s needs. These units facilitate the comparison between the recovered materials and the demand of components and materials. The method assumes that circular economy is fully developed and that the focus is only on the technical feasibility of recovery methods, ignoring the socio-economic obstacles to reuse and recycling. To illustrate the method, the case of clay bricks in Ile-de-France is detailed. During the year 2020, 153 kt of clay bricks were produced by the demolition of buildings in this territory, allowing to obtain, for example, a maximum surface of more than 21,000 m2 of masonry bricks, in reuse, and 9.2 kt of aggregates for concrete manufacturing.

The Functional Machine Calculus III: Control

The Functional Machine Calculus (Heijltjes 2022) is a new approach to unifying the imperative and functional programming paradigms. It extends the lambda-calculus, preserving the key features of confluent reduction and typed termination, to embed computational effects, evaluation strategies, and control flow operations. The first instalment modelled sequential higher-order computation with global store, input/output, probabilities, and non-determinism, and embedded both the call-by-name and call-by-value lambda-calculus, as well as Moggi's computational metalanguage and Levy's call-by-push-value. The present paper extends the calculus from sequential to branching and looping control flow. This allows the faithful embedding of a minimal but complete imperative language, including conditionals, exception handling, and iteration, as well as constants and algebraic data types. The calculus is defined through a simple operational semantics, extending the (simplified) Krivine machine for the lambda-calculus with multiple operand stacks to model effects and a continuation stack to model sequential, branching, and looping computation. It features a confluent reduction relation and a system of simple types that guarantees termination of the machine and strong normalization of reduction (in the absence of iteration). These properties carry over to the embedded imperative language, providing a unified functional-imperative model of computation that supports simple types, a direct and intuitive operational semantics, and a confluent reduction semantics.

Traces via Strategies in Two-Player Games

Traces form a coarse notion of semantic equivalence between states of a process, and have been studied coalgebraically for various types of system. We instantiate the finitary coalgebraic trace semantics framework of Hasuo et al. for controller-versus-environment games, encompassing both nondeterministic and probabilistic environments. Although our choice of monads is guided by the constraints of this abstract framework, they enable us to recover familiar game-theoretic concepts. Concretely, we show that in these games, each element in the trace map corresponds to a collection (a subset or distribution) of plays the controller can force. Furthermore, each element can be seen as the outcome of following a controller strategy. Our results are parametrised by a weak distributive law, which computes what the controller can force in a single step.

Des croquis comme support de raisonnement et de changement de registres

We are convinced of the usefulness of sketches and diagrams during mathematical work but the observation is made in our practices that they are not spontaneously used by students. In order to study the understanding and use of sketches by mathematics students, we designed and then proposed a test at different university levels. The test consists of five exercises.The first concerns different representation registers of a set of numbers, the second on a graphic proof of an implicative algebraic proposition and the last three on the graphic approch to the notions of injectivity, surjectivity, bijectivity in the context of the analysis. The sketches, proposed or requested in each exercise, are intended to be aids to changes of register and reasoning. We present what motivated the choices and developments of the exercises then we analyze the results of these tests. In each case, we see difficulties in understanding and the sketches proposed, which leads to think that the sketch must be the subject of specific work at the university level.

Peer assessment in mathematics: activity of students evaluating proofs

This article deals with peer-assessment in the context of higher education teaching in mathematics, and examines the nature of student activity when assessing work,more precisely proofs, produced by peers. After an overview of research on peer assessment, we propose an experiment with students in a specific post-secondary scientific class, and analyze the activity of the students involved. Our analyses are based on a priori analyses of the proposed tasks and tools from research on students personal mathematical work. We base on written notes of assessments, observations of pairs in assessment situations, and answers to a questionnaire on the perception of their activity. We have identified some specific student activities during the peer assessment process, in particular related to the analysis and correction of proofs, but also to the awareness of the issues associated with evaluation. This enables us to argue for the potential of peer assessment in higher mathematics education.

Weights of mod $p$ automorphic forms and partial Hasse invariants

For a connected, reductive group $G$ over a finite field endowed with a cocharacter $μ$, we define the zip cone of $(G,μ)$ as the cone of all possible weights of mod $p$ automorphic forms on the stack of $G$-zips. This cone is conjectured to coincide with the cone of weights of characteristic $p$ automorphic forms for Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction. We prove in full generality that the cone of weights of characteristic $0$ automorphic forms is contained in the zip cone, which gives further evidence to this conjecture. Furthermore, we determine exactly when the zip cone is generated by the weights of partial Hasse invariants, which is a group-theoretical generalization of a result of Diamond--Kassaei and Goldring--Koskivirta.

Enumerating Finite Braid Group Orbits on $SL_2(\C)$-Character Varieties

We analyze finite orbits of the natural braid group action on the character variety of the $n$ times punctured sphere. Building on recent results relating middle convolution and finite complex reflection groups, our work implements Katz's middle convolution to explicitly classify finite orbits in the $SL_2(\C)$-character variety of the punctured sphere. We provide theoretical results on the existence of finite orbits arising from the imprimitive finite complex reflection groups and formulas for constructing such examples when they exist. In the primitive finite complex reflection groups, we perform an exhaustive search and provide computational results. Our contributions also include Magma computer code for middle convolution and for computing the orbit under this action when it is known to be finite.

Efficacy of topical NSAIDs in tendinopathies: Systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Background. Tendinopathies are a type of musculoskeletal disorder, accounting for 12.6% of general practice consultationsprescribed for this condition. Several meta-analyses concerning their topical forms have been conducted, supporting their efficacy in relieving certain musculo-skeletal disorders, albeit with low levels of evidence quality.Objective. To assess the efficacy of topical NSAIDs in the management of tendinopathies.Methods. A systematic review of the literature was carried out by searching the main medical literature databases. Only randomised trials evaluating a topical NSAID against placebo in the treatment of tendinopathies were included. Their risk of bias was assessed using the RoB2 (risk of bias 2) method. The outcome measure assessed was improvement in pain on movement. The level of evidence from the RCTs (randomised controlled trials) was assessed using the REB (Rebuild the evidence base) method.Results. Four trials with a low risk of bias were included, covering four active substances. The trials on diclofenac epolamine, ketoprofen and niflumic acid were conclusive regarding the resolution of pain on movement. The trial on diclofenac alone was inconclusive regarding this outcome measure. The assessment of efficacy using the REB method concluded that there was ‘convincing evidence to be confirmed’ for diclofenac epolamine and niflumic acid, and a ‘signal’ to be confirmed for ketoprofen. It concluded that there was a lack of evidence for diclofenac alone, indomethacin, piroxicam and ibuprofen.Conclusion. Of all the topical NSAIDs available, only diclofenac epolamine and niflumic acid have established efficacy, with a sufficient level of evidence. These results should be confirmed by a second randomised clinical trial with a low risk of bias.

Crossed glances between patients with eating disorders and GPs: an impossible encounter?

Introduction. Eating disorders, which are common in the general population, are associated with severe psychiatric and physical comorbidities. Early detection of EDs would improve the prognosis for patients with EDs. General practitioners (GPs) are often cited as the key players in the early detection of EDs, whilst the patients concerned do not seem to discuss this during consultations. There is little data to explain this discrepancy.Objective. To compare GPs’ perceptions of their care for patients with EDs with those of patients with EDs regarding the role of their GP in their care pathway and treatment.Methods. A qualitative study using a grounded theory approach. GPs participating in the General Practice Observatory’s database were recruited; they in turn recruited patients with eating disorders whom they were treating in their practices. Individual interviews were conducted, and a constant comparative analysis contrasting GP and patient perspectives, with triangulation by three researchers, was carried out.Results. 24 GPs and 6 female patients were interviewed. The four categories identified were: 1) Eating disorders: a condi-tion rarely encountered by GPs, despite the patients’ long-standing family and personal problems; 2) The encounter bet-ween the GP and the patient with an eating disorder: the clash between the two parties and the relief brought by the dis-closure of the disorder; 3) Managing the eating disorder on a day-to-day basis: the patients’ isolation and shame, and the GPs’ initial sense of helplessness; 4) A fundamental therapeutic alliance: the GP as a trusted figure, but with the risk of emotional dependence.Discussion. An impasse was observed between GPs feeling helpless and incompetent and patients experiencing shame and isolation. GPs appeared to adopt a biopsychosocial approach to patients with eating disorders, were able to draw on specific networks within tertiary care, and needed to address their own negative perceptions. It seems important to remind GPs of the need to identify low self-esteem in adolescents as a marker for eating disorders, and to utilise emotion-focused practice groups.

An Elementary Proof of the FMP for Kleene Algebra

Kleene Algebra (KA) is a useful tool for proving that two programs are equivalent. Because KA's equational theory is decidable, it integrates well with interactive theorem provers. This raises the question: which equations can we (not) prove using the laws of KA? Moreover, which models of KA are complete, in the sense that they satisfy exactly the provable equations? Kozen (1994) answered these questions by characterizing KA in terms of its language model. Concretely, equivalences provable in KA are exactly those that hold for regular expressions. Pratt (1980) observed that KA is complete w.r.t. relational models, i.e., that its provable equations are those that hold for any relational interpretation. A less known result due to Palka (2005) says that finite models are complete for KA, i.e., that provable equivalences coincide with equations satisfied by all finite KAs. Phrased contrapositively, the latter is a finite model property (FMP): any unprovable equation is falsified by a finite KA. Both results can be argued using Kozen's theorem, but the implication is mutual: given that KA is complete w.r.t. finite (resp. relational) models, Palka's (resp. Pratt's) arguments show that it is complete w.r.t. the language model. We embark on a study of the different complete models of KA, and the connections between them. This yields a novel result subsuming those of Palka and Pratt, namely that KA is complete w.r.t. finite relational models. Next, we put an algebraic spin on Palka's techniques, which yield a new elementary proof of the finite model property, and by extension, of Kozen's and Pratt's theorems. In contrast with earlier approaches, this proof relies not on minimality or bisimilarity of automata, but rather on representing the regular expressions involved in terms of transformation automata.

Cardinality and Representation of Stone Relation Algebras

Previous work has axiomatised the cardinality operation in relation algebras, which counts the number of edges of an unweighted graph. We generalise the cardinality axioms to Stone relation algebras, which model weighted graphs, and study the relationships between various axioms for cardinality. This results in simpler cardinality axioms also for relation algebras. We give sufficient conditions for the representability of Stone relation algebras and for Stone relation algebras to be relation algebras.

Modular transform of free fermion generalised Gibbs ensembles and generalised power partitions

In [1] a conjecture for the modular transformation of the free fermion generalised Gibbs ensemble (GGE) was given where only the KdV charge associated to the weight four quasi primary field was inserted. In this paper we first generalise this conjecture to the case with an arbitrary, finite collection of KdV charges in the GGE. These GGEs are generalisations of the generating function of power partitions. We prove the conjectured transformation for the case with a finite number of charges inserted and discuss the case with an infinite number of charges.

Dialect Cartography of Erzya and Moksha Languages: Digitized Historical Sources and Evaluation of the Contemporary Data

This study investigates the correspondences between a recent map of Uralic languages that also covers the Erzya and Moksha languages in detail. We discuss our point of view in linguistic cartography more generally, but especially within the context of Uralic languages, and address various difficulties that can be recognized in defining the speaker area boundaries and choosing settlements that should be included in the traditional or contemporary speech communities. We use the historical data of Heikki Paasonen, which, we believe, is a highly reliable indicator of at least some areas that should be included in the traditional distributions of these languages as points of comparison. This data is contrasted with the contemporary language maps.

Interpretable Socioeconomic Profiling: A Deep Dive Beyond Narrative Classification

This work presents an interpretable framework for socioeconomic status (SES) profiling based on narrative data. Building on our previous publication, “AI Assistant for Socioeconomic Empowerment Using Federated Learning” (NLP4DH 2025), this extended study explores a complementary system that focuses on thematic topic modeling, transformer-based embedding comparisons, and visualization tools. The framework analyzes student and public narratives to detect SES-related themes (e.g., financial hardship, resilience, access to resources) and assigns SES profiles through similarity-based scoring. By emphasizing interpretability and topic-based filtering, the system facilitates analysis of language patterns linked to different SES groups while supporting qualitative inspection. Results demonstrate the model’s ability to generalize across diverse domains and align with known social science frameworks, contributing toward responsible and transparent AI in education and public policy contexts.

The Journal Francophone de Tribologie (JFT) is a peer-reviewed journal founded in 2026, published by the Tribology Scientific and Technical Group of the French Society of Mechanics. The journal publishes significant contributions—whether theoretical, computational or experimental—in the field of tribology and related disciplines, with a view to promoting the open dissemination of francophone scientific research. The JFT journal encourages the dissemination of scientific articles in French; however, submissions in English are also welcome. Each year, a special issue brings together the papers presented at the annual conference Journées Internationales Francophones de Tribologie.

On the Hausdorff dimension and attracting laminations for fully irreducible automorphisms of free groups

Motivated by a classic theorem of Birman and Series about the set of complete simple geodesics on a hyperbolic surface, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the set of endpoints in $\partial F_r$ of some abstract algebraic laminations associated with free group automorphisms. For an exponentially growing outer automorphism $ϕ\in Out(F_r)$ we show that the set of endpoints $\mathcal E_{L}\subseteq \partial F_r$ of any of the \emph{attracting laminations} $L$ of $ϕ$ has Hausdorff and packing dimension $0$ for any visual metric on the boundary $\partial F_r$. Similarly that $L\subseteq \partial^2 F_r$ (where $\partial^2 F_r$ is equipped with the product metric of a visual metric) has Hausdorff dimension $0$ and packing dimension $0$. If $ϕ\in Out(F_r)$ is an atoroidal and fully irreducible, we deduce the same conclusion for the set of endpoints of the ending lamination $Λ_ϕ$ of $ϕ$ that gets collapsed by the Cannon-Thurston map $\partial F_r\to \partial G_ϕ$ for the associated free-by-cyclic group $G_ϕ=F_r\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb Z$. By contrast, the set of endpoints of any of these laminations has upper box dimension $>0$ for any visual metric on $\partial F_r$.

We investigate which group-theoretic invariants are powerful in distinguishing among non-isomorphic p-groups. Based on this, we devise an effective algorithm to solve the group identification problem for the $10,494,213$ groups of order $2^9$. We exhibit 56 pairs of groups of order $2^9$ which are difficult to distinguish by invariants.

Geospatial challenges for urban projects environmental impact assessment

Reducing the environmental impact of the building stock (construction, use, rehabilitation, end of life) is essential in order to achieve a sustainable rate of consumption of the planet's resources. Life cycle analysis (LCA) enables stakeholders to assess several categories of impact of an urban project (damage to human health, damage to biodiversity, etc.) in order to make the most sober choices. This assessment requires a large amount of data that is as representative as possible of the concerned territories. In view of the difficulties encountered in taking into account the geographical dimension, an exploratory interdisciplinary project has been launched to identify spatial challenges to overcome when carrying out a LCA of an urban project. This article presents the initial results of the project, beginning with a description of the issues involved in the spatialization of LCA, followed by a description of some of the challenges encountered more specifically in the context of LCA of urban projects. The aim is to help define a research programme to improve the way in which the geographical dimension is taken into account in the LCA of urban projects, and to inform the geospatial scientific community of the problems encountered by environmental assessment researchers working to provide professional communities with robust and reliable LCA methods and tools.

A constructive approach to strengthen algebraic descriptions of function and operator classes

It is well known that functions (resp. operators) satisfying a property~$p$ on a subset $Q\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ cannot necessarily be extended to a function (resp. operator) satisfying~$p$ on the whole of~$\mathbb{R}^d$. Given $Q \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, this work considers the problem of obtaining necessary and ideally sufficient conditions to be satisfied by a function (resp. operator) on $Q$, ensuring the existence of an extension of this function (resp. operator) satisfying $p$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$. More precisely, given some property $p$, we present a refinement procedure to obtain stronger necessary conditions to be imposed on $Q$. This procedure can be applied iteratively until the stronger conditions are also sufficient. We illustrate the procedure on a few examples, including the strengthening of existing descriptions for the classes of smooth functions satisfying a Łojasiewicz condition, convex blockwise smooth functions, Lipschitz monotone operators, strongly monotone cocoercive operators, and uniformly convex functions. In most cases, these strengthened descriptions can be represented, or relaxed, to semi-definite constraints, which can be used to formulate tractable optimization problems on functions (resp. operators) within those classes.

An adaptive proximal safeguarded augmented Lagrangian method for nonsmooth DC problems with convex constraints

A proximal safeguarded augmented Lagrangian method for minimizing the difference of convex (DC) functions over a nonempty, closed and convex set with additional linear equality as well as convex inequality constraints is presented. Thereby, all functions involved may be nonsmooth. Iterates (of the primal variable) are obtained by solving convex optimization problems as the concave part of the objective function gets approximated by an affine linearization. Under the assumption of a modified Slater constraint qualification, both convergence of the primal and dual variables to a generalized Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point is proven, at least on a subsequence. Numerical experiments and comparison with existing solution methods are presented using some classes of constrained and nonsmooth DC problems.

This paper studies the triviality of commutators in central products of Cayley-Dickson loops. Two immediate outcomes of this study are (1) the construction of a sequence of non-commutative di-associative loops in which the probability that a random commutator is trivial approaches 1, and (2) an easy proof that if two central products of $n$-fold Cayley-Dickson loops are isomorphic for $n\geq 3$, then the loops in the first product are term-wise isomorphic to the loops in the second product.

$δ$-Poisson and transposed $δ$-Poisson algebras

We present a comprehensive study of two new Poisson-type algebras. Namely, we are working with $δ$-Poisson and transposed $δ$-Poisson algebras. Our research shows that these algebras are related to many interesting identities. In particular, they are related to shift associative algebras, $F$-manifold algebras, algebras of Jordan brackets, etc. We classify simple $δ$-Poisson and transposed $δ$-Poisson algebras and found their depolarizations. We study $δ$-Poisson and mixed-Poisson algebras to be Koszul and self-dual. Bases of the free $δ$-Poisson and mixed-Poisson algebras generated by a countable set $X$ are constructed.

This review examines The Greatest of All Plagues (2024) by David Lay Williams, an intellectual history of economic inequality in the Western canon. Drawing its title from Plato's Laws, the book traces the concept of inequality -- understood through the recurring motif of pleonexia (insatiable greed) -- across seven influential figures: Plato, Jesus Christ, Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx. Williams situates each thinker within their socio-economic context, arguing that philosophical reflection on inequality has consistently emerged in response to concrete historical crises and remains indispensable for contemporary political economy.While acknowledging the book's strengths - its interdisciplinary scope, close textual analysis, and contemporary relevance - the review also considers its limitations, including its exclusive focus on the Western canon and the practical inadequacy of some historical prescriptions. Planetary Dynamo Simulation Explorer: a filterable and visualisable web-based, community-driven catalogue

We present a new web tool, Planetary Dynamo Simulation Explorer, to survey available published simulations of rapidly rotating spherical dynamos.With numerical codes and computers being increasingly efficient, recent years have seen a surge in the number of publications presenting such computations.Our tool comes as an interactive catalogue that allows exploring existing dynamos with respect to input and output dimensionless parameters, choosing from various dynamo setups (e.g. choice of boundary conditions, couplings at play, etc.), with the possibility to test scaling laws on a filtered set of simulations.It also links each dynamo to its associated publication and possibly to online datasets. Alongside the cataloguing work, and to enhance comparability across various setups, conversion rules are explicitly derived and aggregated from previous studies and applied on a broad scale for the first time.Thought of as a collaborative and scalable initiative, the web interface allows uploading new simulation metadata.The whole interface, displayed as a website, is designed for the community to have a better overview while driving transparency, open-source initiatives, and FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).We encourage the community to explore and contribute to it at https://geodyn.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/explorer/

The single edge notch fracture test for viscoelastic elastomers

Making use of the Griffith criticality condition recently introduced by Shrimali and Lopez-Pamies (Extreme Mechanics Letters 58: 101944, 2023), this work presents a comprehensive analysis of the single edge notch fracture test for viscoelastic elastomers. The results -- comprised of a combination of a parametric study and direct comparisons with experiments -- reveal how the non-Gaussian elasticity, the nonlinear viscosity, and the intrinsic fracture energy of elastomers interact and govern when fracture nucleates from the pre-existing crack in these tests. The results also serve to quantify the limitations of existing analyses, wherein viscous effects and the actual geometries of the pre-existing cracks and the specimens are neglected.

Cohesive model for fracture simulation of uranium dioxide at high temperature and strain rate

A cohesive zone model is employed to accurately simulate the initiation and propagation of cracks within uranium dioxide fuel under high-temperature and high-strain-rate conditions. This model incorporates two energy-based failure criteria to distinguish between normal and tangential modes of crack propagation. Furthermore, it explicitly takes into account the dependencies on temperature, strain rate, and porosity. The effectiveness of this cohesive zone model approach is validated through three-dimensional simulations of a uniaxial compression test conducted under high-temperature and high-strain-rate conditions. Notably, the critical cohesive energy value identified for the normal mode of crack propagation is found to be lower than that for the tangential mode of crack propagation.

A sub-Riemannian model of neural states in the primary motor cortex

We develop a neurogeometric model for the arm area of motor cortex, which encodes complex motor primitives, ranging from simple movement features like movement direction, to short hand trajectories, termed fragments, and ultimately to more complex patterns known as neural states (Georgopoulos, Hatsopoulos, Kadmon-Harpaz et al). Based on the sub-riemannian framework introduced in 2023, we model the space of fragments as a set of short curves defined by kinematic parameters. We then introduce a geometric kernel that serves as a model for cortical connectivity and use it in a differential equation to describe cortical activity. By applying a grouping algorithm to this cortical activity model, we successfully recover the neural states observed in Kadmon-Harpaz et al, which were based on measured cortical activity. This confirms that the choice of kinematic variables and the distance metric used here are sufficient to explain the phenomena of neural state formation. The modularity of our model reflects the brain's hierarchical structure, where initial groupings in the kinematic space $\mathcal{M}$ lead to more abstract representations. This approach mimics how the brain processes stimuli at different scales, extracting both local and global properties.

Ordinal Characterization of Similarity Judgments

Characterizing judgments of similarity within a perceptual or semantic domain, and making inferences about the underlying structure of this domain from these judgments, has an increasingly important role in cognitive and systems neuroscience. We present a new framework for this purpose that makes limited assumptions about how perceptual distances are converted into similarity judgments. The approach starts from a dataset of empirical judgments of relative similarities: the fraction of times that a subject chooses one of two comparison stimuli to be more similar to a reference stimulus. These empirical judgments provide Bayesian estimates of underling choice probabilities. From these estimates, we derive indices that characterize the set of judgments in three ways: compatibility with a symmetric dis-similarity, compatibility with an ultrametric space, and compatibility with an additive tree. Each of the indices is derived from rank-order relationships among the choice probabilities that, as we show, are necessary and sufficient for local consistency with the three respective characteristics. We illustrate this approach with simulations and example psychophysical datasets of dis-similarity judgments in several visual domains and provide code that implements the analyses at https://github.com/jvlab/simrank.

Femwashing in Women’s Sports: When Commitment Fades After Competition

This article introduces the concept of femwashing within the field of sports marketing and corporate social responsibility (CSR). The term, which first appeared in online usage in 2017 and has been mobilized in academic research since 2022-2023 (Haggren, 2022; Walters, R. 2022), follows the trajectory of other “washing” practices such as greenwashing (Delmas & Burbano, 2011; Lyon & Montgomery, 2015) or pinkwashing (King, 2006). We define femwashing as the opportunistic display of egalitarian commitments without sustainable organizational transformation or structural support for women.Based on a qualitative analysis of emblematic campaigns (Adidas, Nike, Visa, Orange), we highlight a typology of femwashing in sports, structured into three forms: event-based, stereotypical, and organizational. Beyond being a simple extension of existing washings, femwashing serves as an analytical lens for examining the relationship between media visibility and CSR governance.From a theoretical perspective, it enriches the taxonomy of washing practices and bridges two domains that have remained largely siloed: CSR and sports sponsorship. From a managerial perspective, it questions organizational authenticity and opens new avenues for innovation in corporate engagement with women’s sports.

Analysis of values in the statutes of sports clubs: The case of clubs in Ticino and Vaud

This study examines how sports clubs in the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Vaud integrate ethical and social values into their governance by analysing their statutes. Sports clubs, as central actors in youth socialization, serve as key venues for the dissemination of values. The aim is to assess the extent to which these values are formalized, made explicit, and aligned with the Swiss Olympics’ Ethics Charter.A total of 190 statutes from clubs affiliated with various federations were analysed using a qualitative approach (MAXQDA). The coding framework was based on the values promoted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), UNESCO, and Swiss Olympic.The results show that the promotion of sport (160 mentions) and team spirit (83 mentions) are the most frequent themes, while moral and ethical principles are less commonly cited (41 mentions). The complete absence of the verb “to transmit,” despite its centrality in the Ethics Charter, reveals a lack of formalization in how values are conveyed. Ticino clubs more frequently reference the Ethics Charter, whereas Vaud clubs place greater emphasis on fair play and anti-doping measures.These findings highlight a gap between the recognition of values and their practical implementation. To enhance the effective transmission of values to young athletes, it is necessary to harmonize the drafting of statutes, introduce training initiatives, and include monitoring mechanisms.

Pole Dynamics, Linearization, and Perturbations of the Satsuma--Mimura Equation

This paper investigates the pole dynamics and perturbation theory of algebraic soliton solutions associated with the Satsuma--Mimura (SM) equation. First, we give a qualitative analysis of the pole system associated with algebraic soliton solutions, thereby completing a point left open in \cite{Yan_2025}. We then examine three perturbations of the SM equation. The $u_x$ perturbation preserves exact linearizability and leads to an explicit shifted algebraic soliton solution. The $u_{xx}$ perturbation can be reduced to the unperturbed SM equation by a scaling transformation, which yields the corresponding pole asymptotics and soliton profile. For the genuinely nontrivial $Hu_{xx}$ perturbation, we derive the first-order perturbation equations and present a short-time numerical simulation based on an explicit Euler discretization. These results clarify how algebraic solitons of the SM equation respond to different perturbative mechanisms.

Superintegrable 2D systems in magnetic fields with a parabolic type integral

We consider the problem on the existence of two dimensional superintegrable systems in the presence of a magnetic field in the two dimensional Euclidean space. We assume the existence of two integrals of motion, besides the Hamiltonian, that are quadratic polynomials in the momenta. This problem was already studied in the cases where one integral is of Cartesian or polar type [J. Bérubé, and P. Winternitz, J. Math. Phys., 45(5): 1959-1973, 2004]. We continue the investigation by assuming that one of the integrals is of parabolic type and the second integral is of elliptic or (''non-standard'') parabolic type, confirming so far that, on the Euclidean plane, the only two dimensional superintegrable system with quadratic integrals is the one with constant magnetic field and constant electrostatic potential.

Characterization of a Plasma Source for Water Treatment Using Electrical, Optical, and Chemical Diagnostics

Hospital and urban wastewaters constitute major reservoirs of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MRB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and persistent pharmaceutical contaminants, which are only partially removed by conventional treatment plants. As a result, these pollutants are frequently detected in treated effluents destined for environmental discharge or reuse, raising serious public health concerns-especially for agricultural irrigation. This study explores a novel immersed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma source engineered for point-of-use decontamination of wastewater at emission sites. The plasma device was thoroughly characterized by electrical, optical, and chemical diagnostics to elucidate its operating regimes and capacity to generate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) at the plasma-liquid interface. Findings demonstrate that the composition of the carrier gas critically shapes the production and transfer of short-and long-lived oxidants into the liquid phase. These results provide quantitative insights that support the ongoing optimization of plasma-based advanced oxidation systems for decentralized water treatment. They further illustrate how the careful control of plasma and gas composition can enhance the formation and transfer of oxidants, contributing to the broader field of plasma-liquid applications for the mitigation of emerging contaminants.

Modeling of evaporation of macroparticles of vacuum arcs by an electron beam

The evaporation of droplets in an arc plasma flow under the action of an electron beam injected into the arc plasma and the condition of direct heating of microdroplets by beam electrons are considered. Analytical modeling shows that droplets ≤1 μm in size can be completely evaporated over time scales typical for cathodic arc deposition systems. It is shown that small microdroplets evaporate more intensively. The lower limit working points in terms of plasma electron density, and the electron energy and density of the injected energetic electrons required for droplet evaporation are found.

EVALUATION DU RISQUE DE LIBERATION DE LA VIANDE INFECTEE PAR MYCOBACTERIUM BOVIS DANS LA CHAINE DE CONSOMMATION A SAINT-LOUIS DU SENEGAL

La tuberculose bovine (TB), causée par Mycobacterium bovis, demeure une zoonose prioritaire au Sénégal, représentant un enjeu majeur de santé publique et de sécurité alimentaire. Cette étude a pour objectif d'évaluer le risque de libération de viande infectée dans la chaîne de consommation à partir de l'abattoir de Saint-Louis. Une approche quantitative d'évaluation du risque a été appliquée à l'aide de la méthode de simulation de Monte-Carlo. Les données d'inspection sanitaire ont permis d'estimer la probabilité d'introduction de viande tuberculeuse après le contrôle post-mortem. Les résultats indiquent un risque moyen de libération de viande infectée de 6,67 × 10⁻⁶ [5,09 × 10⁻⁶ -8,57 × 10⁻⁶] avec un intervalle de confiance de 90 %. La quantité moyenne de viande infectée susceptible d'atteindre le consommateur est estimée à 2 207,45 kg par an [2 068,38 -2 346,49], soit environ 6,05 kg par jour. Ce risque persiste en raison de carcasses et d'abats échappant à l'inspection post-mortem, dont le risque moyen est évalué à 4,10 × 10⁻⁶ [3,01 × 10⁻⁶ -5,34 × 10⁻⁶]. Ces résultats mettent en évidence la nécessité de renforcer le dispositif d'inspection sanitaire à l'abattoir de Saint-Louis et de moderniser les outils de détection de la tuberculose bovine afin de réduire le risque de transmission à l'homme et d'améliorer la sécurité sanitaire des viandes.

Phytobiotics as Alternatives to Antibiotics in Poultry Production: A Review of the Literature and Analysis of the Potential of Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Die Geflügelwirtschaft spielt eine zentrale Rolle für die Ernährungssicherheit und trägt erheblich zur wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung vieler Länder bei. Dieser Sektor steht jedoch vor großen gesundheitlichen Herausforderungen, insbesondere bakteriellen Infektionen, und ist stark von Antibiotika abhängig. In diesem Kontext erscheinen Phytobiotika als vielversprechende natürliche Alternativen zur Verbesserung der Gesundheit und Leistungsfähigkeit von Geflügel. Unter ihnen sticht Ingwer (Zingiber officinale) aufgrund seiner bioaktiven Eigenschaften besonders hervor und gewinnt zunehmend an Interesse als potenzieller Ersatz für chemische Wachstumsförderer. Dieser Literaturüberblick fasst den aktuellen Wissensstand zur Verwendung von Ingwer in der Geflügelproduktion zusammen, mit Fokus auf seine zootechnischen, physiologischen, metabolischen, antimikrobiellen und antioxidativen Wirkungen. Experimentelle Daten zeigen, dass Ingwer die Nährstoffverdaulichkeit, Gewichtszunahme, Futterverwertung, biochemische und hämatologische Parameter sowie die Darmmorphologie bei Geflügel verbessert. Im Vergleich zu kommerziellen Zusatzstoffen bietet er eine vergleichbare Leistung, reduziert Risiken durch chemische Rückstände und fördert eine nachhaltige Produktion. Die Wirksamkeit von Ingwer hängt jedoch von der verwendeten Form, der Dosierung, der Art und den Haltungsbedingungen ab, was die Notwendigkeit einer Standardisierung der Protokolle und weiterer Forschungen zu innovativen Formulierungen und Anwendungen auf andere Vogelarten unterstreicht. Schließlich bietet Ingwer in Subsahara-Afrika ein erhebliches sozioökonomisches Potenzial, da er eine lokal verfügbare Ressource zur Steigerung der Geflügelproduktivität darstellt und gleichzeitig den Antibiotikaeinsatz reduziert. Dieser Überblick liefert somit eine wissenschaftliche Grundlage für die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Geflügelstrategien unter Einbeziehung von Ingwer als natürlichem Futtermittelzusatz.

Die Hochschulmathematik vermittelt ein stark verdichtetes Wissen, das sich auf mengentheoretische Definitionen und formale Beweise stützt und weitgehend von Kontextbezügen befreit ist. Dies ist die letzte Stufe einer langfristigen Entwicklung des mathematischen Denkens, die mit der physischen Wahrnehmung und dem Handeln in konkreten Situationen beginnt und in einem langen Prozess der Reformulierung und Verfeinerung wächst. Wenn ein junger Student/eine Studentin als Lehrkraft in die Schule zurückkehrt, muss er oder sie zu den Wurzeln zurückkehren und seine oder ihre Schülerinnen und Schüler in diesem Prozess begleiten und unterstützen. Diese Aufgabe ist mit vielfältigen erkenntnistheoretischen Anforderungen verbunden, auf die im folgenden Beitrag eingegangen wird.

Specificity of the knowledge in logic and its consequences on Klein's double discontinuity

In mathematics, logic is a field with a specific and transversal status. Indeed, it allows us to describe, control and validate mathematical activity. Therefore, it seems relevant to teach it in mathematics' classes.First, we present some research results from the DEMIPS’ « Logic and Proof » group. Based on interviews with university teachers, we will show different choices made for these kinds of courses and the different epistemologies relating to the proof that underlie them.Furthermore, since 2009, logic is faintly coming back in the french high school curriculum. Then, how can pre-service teachers rely on their university knowledges and transpose them to teach at high school level? We are going to answer this question of Klein's second discontinuity by presenting results from research in mathematics education about students’ difficulties and by explaining training situations we suggest.

In Georgia, Embracing the Ruptures: Between Geopolitical Shift, Mass Mobilisations, and Authoritarian Transition

This article, informed by the sociology of social movements, looks into the waves of mobilisations in Georgia between February 2022 and the summer of 2024, which preceded a phase of authoritarian consolidation of power. This pivotal period is characterised by an intensification of protests, which reveal the geopolitical tensions that exist within the country. The article draws on the theoretical framework of critical junctures to explore how these mobilisations materialise the rupture between the citizens’ aspirations and the government’s diplomatic shift. Furthermore, it examines the emergence of renewed protest practices, such as the symbolic use of Europe and Ukraine, and a general mistrust of traditional political elites. A focus on the dynamics of civil society prior to the enactment of the ‘foreign agents law’ enables a more detailed examination of the nuances of a resistance confronted with an impending institutional deadlock.

Breakdown and Continuities of Russian Imperialism in the Bessarabian Question after the Russian Revolution

This article examines the breakdown and continuities of Russian imperialism in the Bessarabian question following the 1917 Russian Revolution. It highlights the paradox of the officially anti-imperialist Soviet discourse, which combined the collapse of the old empire with the territorialization of a universalist ideology. The actions of the Communist International and the use of the principle of national self-determination allowed the USSR to transform its imperial project into an ideological model with universal ambitions. By analyzing the Bessarabian conflict and its diplomatic, ideological, and insurrectionary dimensions during the interwar period, culminating in the failure of the Tatar Bunar uprising in 1924, the article shows how the USSR attempted to project revolutionary expansion into the region. This study sheds light on the specificity of a renewed Soviet imperialism, concealed behind the rhetoric of national and social liberation.

A Discrete Analog of Tutte's Barycentric Embeddings on Surfaces

Tutte's celebrated barycentric embedding theorem describes a natural way to build straight-line embeddings (crossing-free drawings) of a (3-connected) planar graph: map the vertices of the outer face to the vertices of a convex polygon, and ensure that each remaining vertex is in convex position, namely, a barycenter with positive coefficients of its neighbors. Actually computing an embedding then boils down to solving a system of linear equations. A particularly appealing feature of this method is the flexibility given by the choice of the barycentric weights. Generalizations of Tutte's theorem to surfaces of nonpositive curvature are known, but due to their inherently continuous nature, they do not lead to an algorithm. In this paper, we propose a purely discrete analog of Tutte's theorem for surfaces (with or without boundary) of nonpositive curvature, based on the recently introduced notion of reducing triangulations. We prove a Tutte theorem in this setting: every drawing homotopic to an embedding such that each vertex is harmonious (a discrete analog of being in convex position) is a weak embedding (arbitrarily close to an embedding). We also provide a polynomial-time algorithm to make an input drawing harmonious without increasing the length of any edge, in a similar way as a drawing can be put in convex position without increasing the edge lengths.

Testing Support Size More Efficiently Than Learning Histograms

Consider two problems about an unknown probability distribution $p$: 1. How many samples from $p$ are required to test if $p$ is supported on $n$ elements or not? Specifically, given samples from $p$, determine whether it is supported on at most $n$ elements, or it is "$ε$-far" (in total variation distance) from being supported on $n$ elements. 2. Given $m$ samples from $p$, what is the largest lower bound on its support size that we can produce? The best known upper bound for problem (1) uses a general algorithm for learning the histogram of the distribution $p$, which requires $Θ(\tfrac{n}{ε^2 \log n})$ samples. We show that testing can be done more efficiently than learning the histogram, using only $O(\tfrac{n}{ε\log n} \log(1/ε))$ samples, nearly matching the best known lower bound of $Ω(\tfrac{n}{ε\log n})$. This algorithm also provides a better solution to problem (2), producing larger lower bounds on support size than what follows from previous work. The proof relies on an analysis of Chebyshev polynomial approximations outside the range where they are designed to be good approximations, and the paper is intended as an accessible self-contained exposition of the Chebyshev polynomial method.
